As a writer I am always looking for the right words, the best topics, and top ideas. However, like any writer, I occasionally suffer from blocks of, well, writer’s block. It can be frustrating, to say the least, and there were times I would go days, even weeks, unable to think of a thing to write about. Even to the point of contemplating giving up on writing altogether. In fact, writer’s block was always a big part of my writing journey through hell.
Until, however, recently, when I found some ways that helped me unblock my writer’s block almost every time. One key factor I learned is that relaxing the mind is the best and only way to combat writer’s block and unleash the imagination. Here are a few ways that work for me and I hope one or more of these ways can help you also.
- Watch Television– Curling up in front of a good movie is a great way to generate ideas and even hear some words or phrases that might joggle the mind and find a story behind it. The daily news is also a great way to find new topics and ideas.
- Take a Drive– Nothing for me is more relaxing than taking a long drive. It’s a great way to relax my mind (it’s even more relaxing if hubby is driving) and I often come home with a chunk of writing ideas. Some of them get trashed, some get used.
- Meditate– No, I do not mean sitting on the floor in the lotus position and chanting. I’m talking about finding a quiet, comfortable, distraction-free environment where you can completely relax your mind and clear your thoughts. For me, I go into my bedroom, shut the door and lie on the bed. I think of nothing in particular and I try to clear my mind. Yes, I often fall asleep, but after a nice nap I’m ready to start pounding at the keyboard.
These are just a few ways that I found that help me when I just can’t seem to find the right words or come up with a good story idea. I hope they help you too. Writer’s block is very unpleasant and can be stressful if working with a deadline. Finding a way to clear and relax your mind is key to unleashing your imagination.
